Freeport High School Class Of 2006
Top of the Class

Exceptional class stands out in diverse areas

Freeport High School held its graduation exercises at 1 p.m. on June 11 in the school gym and awarded diplomas to 115 seniors.

Nicolette Greene sang "Goodbye's the Saddest Word." The senior class address was delivered by Becca Powers, who gave a speech titled, "I Dare You."

The keynote speakers were two American Studies teachers, Peggy Muir and Rich Robinson.

Principal Thomas K. Edwards, who is retiring, gave the farewell address. He said this class provided great leadership all year and set a record for being scholars. Their scores on the Maine Educational Assessment test were the highest the school has ever had, Edwards said, adding that all the students have positive plans for school, work or military service after graduation.

"That makes me feel great that we are here for every kid," he said. "When they have a good plan . . . that really makes you feel like we got there. They did a good job."

For the first time in school history, a student, Nolan McKusick, will be heading to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Five students are going into the military and 75 percent of the students graduated with honors, Edwards said.

Nearly ever senior has volunteered in the community. The class also has many talented athletes who have won state championship titles in several sports, including skiing and cross country. Logan Crane, the president of the senior class, is the fastest woman runner to graduate from high school in Maine, Edwards said, adding that she holds four state records.

"She is a lot of fun. She is a great kid," he said. "We have had some very successful teams. We have kids who excel and give back in the arts. This class is full of outstanding artists and musicians."

Edwards said he feels that they are ready to face the road ahead.

"My wish is for the students to thrive in their lives and learning and to find their own ways to help others," Edwards said.
